Ducati Multistrada 1200 Key Design Features
In designing the Multistrada 1200 we wanted to meet 2 goals
1)
Create a motorcycle that could be 4 bikes in
1
2)
To make this new motorcycle easy to handle and
safe and comfortable for both the rider and the passenger.
Thanks to its distinctive design, the Multistrada 1200 looks impressive and conveys the idea of comfort, lightness and a desire to travel.
In order to meet these two goals we worked on 4 areas:
1)
Introduction of the riding mode concept
2)
Advanced technological solutions
3)
Reducing Weight and improving comfort
4)
Consistency with Ducati Heritage
Riding Modes
The inspired idea which allowed us to create 4 bikes in 1
was the incorporation of:
-
3 different mappings for the engine
-
Electronic suspension with different setting
levels
-
8 Ducati Traction Control DTC sensitivity levels
By combining these aspects in an appropriate way, we've developed 4 different configurations called Riding Modes.

The ENGINE
The Multistrada 1200 is powered by a brand new engine: the
Testastretta 11°.
The challenge was to make a World Superbike championship-winning engine
enjoyable and easy to use for all.
To explain the origins of the name, we first need to go into a bit of technical
detail about the engine's design. The ‘overlap' is defined as the interval crankshaft
rotation, measured in degrees, during which both the intake and exhaust valves
are open at the same time.
In a Superbike , where the goal is high performance without compromise, the overlap values are high. For touring bikes suitable for long journeys, lower overlap values are preferred. As a result, power delivery is much smoother, maximizing ease of use and riding comfort for both rider and passenger.
In the new engine, the overlap angel has been reduced from 41° to 11 ° compared to the Testastretta Evoluzione engine used in the 1198 . This results in lower fuel consumption, smoother power delivery and reduced levels of exhaust gases.
The Testastretta 11° has a maximum power of 150bhp and a maximum torque of 12.1kgm (87.5lb-ft).
(DES) Ducati Electronic Suspension (S model only)
Our engineers, together with engineers from Ohlins, have developed an
innovative electronic suspension system exclusively for the Multistrada 1200.
The Ducati Electronic Suspension (DES) enables independent damping adjustment
of
- front compression and rebound
- rear compression and rebound
- rear spring pre-load
20 possible settings are available for each of the 5 adjustments on the Multistrada 1200.
The DES system differs from other commercially available electronic suspension systems thanks to its integration with the Riding Modes and the direct control from the instrument panel.
DTC (S model only)
Ducati Traction Control (DTC), which is used in the
Superbike and Streetfighter models, is a smart system that acts as a filter
between the rider's hand and the rear wheel
In the span of a few thousandths of a second, the DTC is able to detect and control wheel-spin, improving the motorcycle's active safety levels. Each Riding Mode has a preset DTC level which can be personalised by the rider by selecting one of the sensitivity levels directly from the instrument panel.
Thanks to the Bosch- Brembo built ABS, excellent braking performance is possible under any kind of road conditions. This means that the active safety levels in poor traction conditions or during emergency stops are considerably improved for everyday use.
The ABS system can be disabled directly from the instrument panel menu and will be automatically reactivated upon the next key on.
Comfort

Two separate seats for the rider and the passenger, designed
with great attention to the shape and foam material density, ensure maximum
comfort even on long journey. Lengthy, detailed tests have been conducted to
verify the ergonomics and comfort level for both the rider and passenger.
The Multistrada 1200 has been designed with the aim of travelling comfortably with a passenger even on long journeys.
A Ducati has never had such a comfortable seat!
As a result, as well as having two separate saddles, the
passenger seat has been positioned away from the heat generated by the exhaust.
The passenger grab rail has a large secure and ergonomic grip.
Finally, the top case, available as an accessory, is fitted with a soft cushion
which provides the passenger with a safe and comfortable backrest.
